4 Things That Affect the Whiteness of Your Smile

A teeth whitening treatment at our Northport, NY dental office can give your smile a much-needed boost for any special event. Whitening is a simple way to brighten your smile and enhance and lighten the color of your teeth.

If you wonder exactly what it is that causes your teeth to stain or darken over time, here are a few things to be aware of:

The Aging Process

Teeth naturally wear and discolor as we age. Over time, the dental enamel will become slightly pitted and worn no matter how much care you take with your oral hygiene. This slight erosion makes teeth prone to discoloration since stains can more easily penetrate porous surface enamel. Contributing to the yellow appearance of your teeth is the fact that, as enamel wears away, the darker layer of dentin beneath begins to show through.

Ineffective Dental Hygiene

Ineffective oral hygiene will compromise your oral health, but it will also compromise the bright color of your teeth. There’s no way around it - If you want a bright white smile, you must brush and floss daily.

Genetics

There is little that can be done to change our basic physical makeup, and it's a fact that certain people have teeth with a yellowish hue. This is simply a result of the fact that the outer layer of dental enamel has a more translucent quality, causing the dentin beneath to seem more obvious.

Stain-Producing Foods

Some foods and drinks contribute to the discoloration of dental enamel, such as red wine, tobacco products, and dark fruit juices or sodas (like cola). It is not necessary or even recommended that you cut out all these foods altogether. But you will have a better chance of maintaining a healthy white smile if you remember to brush or at least rinse your mouth after consuming these products.
